Tours to Dookie Dairy Visit the Automatic Milking System at the University of Melbourne Dairy at Dookie. The bus will depart from the front of the Ballantyne Complex on Wednesday morning at 9.00 am sharp and will return to IDW by approximately 12.30 pm. To guarantee a seat (21 seater bus) please put your name down at the IDW Office It is three years since the Automatic Milking System (AMS) was installed at The University of Melbourne dairy at the Dookie campus in northern Victoria. The production system is now well established and there is a growing research program utilising the farm. The Dookie dairy has 3 Lely Astronaut automatic milking machines that currently milk a herd of 157 dairy cows up to three times per day. The dairy is a pasture-based production system. The milking herd has access to 55 hectares of irrigated pasture and a further 11 hectares of dryland pasture and crops that are grazed. Substantial effort over the last 12 months has been devoted to improving pastures at the dairy to produce more ‘home grown’ feed. Increasing pasture production will allow the farm to increase herd size, with plans to expand the milking herd to 180 cows so that the robots are fully utilised. The tour is proudly sponsored by GreenCon and Lely.
